Our Team
Dr Anu Kataria
Consultant Psychiatrist | Senior Clinical Lecturer, University of Sydney
Anu is a Consultant Psychiatrist with over 30 years of experience across public and private mental health settings. She brings a person-centred approach to her work — combining medical expertise with empathy, warmth and genuine respect. Her patients often describe her as kind, patient and perceptive, and value the time and space she offers to be truly heard.
Anu works with adults experiencing a range of concerns, including anxiety and mood disorders, psychosis, trauma and PTSD, and personality-related difficulties. She adopts a conservative approach to prescribing — preferring to “start low and go slow” — and integrates supportive psychotherapy within a biopsychosocial model of care. She holds a Certificate of Advanced Training in the Psychotherapies from the RANZCP and is pursuing further training in ACT and CBT to extend her therapeutic toolkit.
She values collaboration and has worked extensively within multidisciplinary teams throughout her career. She is proactive in maintaining open communication with psychologists, GPs, families and carers (always with client consent), recognising that good outcomes are often built on shared understanding and coordinated support.
Anu completed her psychiatric training in India in the early 1990s, before moving to Australia in 1998 and requalifying as a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) in 2003. She worked for many years at Cumberland Hospital in both inpatient and community roles and now holds admitting rights at Ramsay Clinic, Wentworthville. Her broad clinical experience means she can provide support through acute mental health crises as well as ongoing, longer-term treatment.
She is also a passionate educator. She currently holds a Senior Clinical Lecturer position at the University of Sydney, where she teaches medical students in clinical settings during their hospital placements. She previously served for a decade on RANZCP’s training and examination committees and was Director of Training at Cumberland Hospital. Her interest in student wellbeing gives her added insight into the unique challenges faced by young people in academic or early-career settings.
Anu speaks both English and Hindi and brings cultural sensitivity and calm clinical presence to all her interactions. She is committed to helping people feel better about themselves and to supporting their recovery in a way that is respectful, considered, and aligned with what matters most to them.
